Canon Point: After meeting Gojyo and Hakkai
History: History of Son Goku in Saiyuki Goku, having been imprisoned within the confines of a mountain for hundreds of years, was finally set free when Genjyo Sanzo found him after saying that he 'heard someone calling for him'. Goku, happy to be set free, has currently been getting reacquainted with the world, having lost the memories of his time up in Heaven. He assists the priest Sanzo with his missions from the Three Aspects, utilizing his incredible strength to compliment Sanzo's leadership ability and wit.
Recently, he has come to know Sha Gojyo and Cho Hakkai, who he would very easily call his new companions. The two come to the temple Sanzo and Goku are staying at to visit, and from time-to-time assist with missions. When they're not doing that, however, Hakkai takes time out of his day to come and teach Goku the fundamentals of education... which is good. Being locked away for so long doesn't give you the opportunity to learn anything.
Personality: More than anything about Goku's personality, it is evident that he is very straight forward about his feelings. He wears his heart on his sleeve. When you look upon his face and whatever expression he is making, what you see is what you get.
Simple would be a wonderful word to describe him. When Goku is happy or elated, the bright smile is clear on his face. When he is down and out, his brows furrow and the pout can be seen. When he needs something, such as when he is hungry, it never occurs to him to not ask for what he needs (or whine for it, if his needs and wants are left unattended to for a certain length of time). When he is angry, he yells, he shouts. Goku is all about getting his point across. He has no need or reason to hide how he is feeling. This is probably due to the fact that he was imprisoned for such a long stint of time; before, he had no one to tell his laments to. It's different, now. He's not alone. He has
companions, ones he holds very dear to him.
Goku's default personality, however, is one filled with childish wonder and joy. The world is a vast place after all, with lots of people to meet, places to go, and plenty of delicious food to eat. Speaking of
food! If there is one thing that occupied Goku's mind constantly, without fail, it is food, food, food,
food. From sweet fruits to hearty meats and well-prepared meals, Goku is all about speedy consumption. It's said due to his hundreds of years locked up without eating (being sustained by divine magic) that he's just making up for lost time. That may or may not be the case. It doesn't matter to Goku, regardless. Just by giving him food, you can instantly make him happy (or shut him up, depending). There's hardly a better way to put an instantly smile on his face.
Goku does have other things that make him happy--not just food. Simple he may be, but shallow he is not! Goku also loves fighting. At the point he is taken from, he has yet to experience the real joy it gives him, but at the moment it is still something that gives Goku a sense of accomplishment. He's strong--
very strong--so being able to burn off all his energy and hone his natural skill brings him great pleasure. Being around the Sanzo-ikkou is also another thing that Goku enjoys. Each member has their own personality and worth to bring to the table.
Goku's relationship with Cho Hakkai is an interesting one. Hakkai's nurturing attitude towards children gives them a sort of parent/child relationship, as well as teacher/student. Hakkai used to be a teacher once, and is currently in the process of helping Goku learn, especially when it comes to math. Hakkai has been seen trying to engage Goku in learning by using a subject he is interested in: food. Using oranges (even bitter ones), didn't quite work out how he wanted it to. Goku usually goes to Hakkai when he needs something, especially if he's too scared or embarrassed to ask Sanzo for help (for the third time). His usual cries include being bored and wanting food, but he's only fifteen... kind of. In turn, Hakkai is very patient with him. Goku would have no qualms in helping Hakkai out when asked.
Sha Gojyo is another member of the group, and he and Goku's relationship is very much that of the older/younger brother dynamic. An avid chain-smoking, boozing, womanizing man is a bad example for Goku, really. At first, Gojyo's nature of why he did things was just met with confusion... but now is complimented with blunt commentary about how 'smoking is gross' and 'drinking is bad for you'. Despite this, Gojyo is
actually the most approachable out of the three to Goku... which is why anything can fly out of the boy's mouth at anytime, which leads to name-calling, bickering, whining, and arguing... to which Hakkai and Sanzo have to deal with. Still, if they're not arguing, Goku feels comfortable around the other--to the point where, if he
was scared of something, maybe, just maybe, Gojyo would be a back to hide behind.
Last but certainly not least is Genjyo Sanzo... the man who freed him from isolation and loneliness. There is a certain aura that Sanzo has to him when Goku looks upon him--one that he can compare to the shining sun, something that had always represented freedom. Due to this, Goku would do anything for Sanzo to help him out. Sanzo was the one that allowed him to see the world, after all. Even so, their relationship is not master/servant, nor brotherly or paternal by any means... Sanzo is just Sanzo. And Goku is just Goku. That's just how it is. Regardless, Goku would stay by his side and help whenever he is needed. Sanzo is very important to him, on a deeper level than Goku can comprehend... but, as Goku's memories of his life up in Heaven have been erased, to this day, he doesn't understand why.
While Goku has many great and admirable qualities, like all people he does have things he does not like or could be considered flaws. He is very afraid of being abandoned, as he was alone for so long while locked atop the mountain. Losing someone because of his own ability to help is another. While he was locked away, Goku had a small bird that would come in from time-to-time and visit, but one day it died just feet away from his cave. Goku reached, stretched, and strained to grab hold of the bird to try to help, to see if there was anything he could do... however, the little bird was just inches away from his grip. He most likely had to watch for a very long time as right outside of his save, the bird eventually rotted away and turned into nothingness... and there was nothing he was able to do about it.
Goku also does not like snow at this point. He was always very cold when winter came, and would wrap himself up in his hair to keep warm. But he didn't just do it for warmth of the body, but the emptiness he felt in his heart as well. Snow is desolate, white, and never-ending. He most likely believed his time in captivity would be like that too: eternal.
Goku has an eagerness to learn about the world and others as well, so he will not be stopped in potentially making friends, especially if he is able to do so with people his own age. He is friendly, loyal, and a bit naive... but that's what makes Goku, Goku.
Inventory: The clothes on his back and the gold diadem on his forehead. It keeps his demon-side at bay, after all. Can't live without it!
Abilities: An incredibly capable fighter with super strength! This is Son Goku, after all. We all know how anime like to treat the power of a Son Goku. As stated, he's got super-strength as slated with demons. At this point, he's not a
super skilled fighter, but he's got natural instincts that come into play when it comes to fighting. His strength makes up for it, but it's severely nerfed due to the power limiter on his head.
When the power limited is removed, his strength grows exponentially, as he is able to draw energy from the earth to continue on any sort of rampage he goes into. Unfortunately, this comes with a loss of self, becoming a somewhat mindless and cruel killer, cutting down whatever stands in his way. He is unable to differentiate friend from foe. He is also able to move at speeds that make him incredibly hard to see, as he dashes from one place to another. As long as a power limiter can be procured, however, he will revert back to his normal state.
Flaws: Goku is the
Seiten Taisei, 'The Sage Equaling Heaven', but he's not
quite a god, though he has strength to rival one. This part of him is kept locked away with the help of the heavenly gold diadem upon his head. When the diadem breaks, the otherwise kind-but-rambunctious Goku transforms into a demonic deity that is nearly impossible to control or bring to its senses. Another aspect is that Goku can be
very trusting, very naive, especially at the point he is being taken from, where he has yet to learn a lot about human nature. Third, Goku eats,
a lot, to the point of gluttony. It's said he's making up for the hundreds of years he was locked up without needing to eat, but even so, the amount he consumes is far beyond what is most likely necessary. Forth, Goku, who had been sealed away for so long, has something akin to abandonment issues. He doesn't like to be left alone, thinking that if he is by himself for far too long, that he'll be stuck without contact like he had been for five hundred years. Lastly, and while Goku and others could potentially consider this a strength, he has the tendency to never give up, no matter what. While during his imprisonment and time with Sanzo and company this aspect has come in handy, in the wrong time and context, his tenacity could be considered a huge flaw indeed, and potentially very dangerous.
SAMPLESAction Log Sample: Whenever Hakkai and Gojyo came over to the temple to teach, Goku found himself feeling ecstatic. He wasn't an especially early riser, but usually with Hakkai came the promise of delicious food, even if the man didn't mean it. Today, Hakkai was going to be teaching him math, so around 2pm, Goku found himself sitting cross legged in front of his tutor. They were going to be learning multiplication... but with oranges!
Oranges were yummy. That's all Goku could really concentrate on, and even though the lesson was well underway, the golden-eyed boy found his thoughts wandering. Well, scratch that. If he actually
found his wandering thoughts, he would have stopped them. He didn't want Hakkai potentially chastising him for not paying attention to their math lesson. Unfortunately, the fact of the matter was that Goku
wasn't that aware. So the daydreaming commenced.
Did Hakkai have any more oranges? Right now there were only two in front of him. Goku's eyes watched Hakkai's slender fingers move them around. What were they talking about? Oh, that's right! Multipl... multiplication! That's right. Whatever that meant. Multiple meant many, so...
That meant more oranges, right?!
Yes! And when more oranges appeared, four now, Goku instantly pictured four people: he, Sanzo, Gojyo, and his current tutor Hakkai. Four, orange versions of them that rolled around on the floor. He could already picture the Sanzo-Orange smoking and reading his newspaper and calling him a 'stupid monkey'. The Gojyo-Orange was the same, only no newspaper. Maybe alcohol? He liked to drink that nasty poo-water stuff... yuck!
The other two oranges, the Hakkai-Orange, and the Goku-Orange, would not smoke or be dumb like the Gojyo-Orange or mean like the Sanzo-Orange. They were the sweet oranges! Did Hakkai only have oranges? What about peaches? Oh, oh,
peaches would have been
awesome! But sadly, there were no peaches. Hakkai said something, drawing Goku out of his thoughts about the four oranges going somewhere together, someplace happy. His head shot up, and he stared at Hakkai with wide, golden eyes from behind wild brown hair. The other man was probably waiting for an answer. What did he say?
There was a pause. Goku's expression slowly went from perplexed to smiling, wide. He pointed a small finger towards the four oranges on the ground. The Sanzo-Orange-ikkou.
"...Can I eat them?" Because he knew if he ate them, he'd be super full.
...Full of happiness, from all of his new friends.
